Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Series

After 4 rounds of the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Series completed, Shannon Eckstein looks set to defend his Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Ironman Series title. Shannon won the opening two rounds at Kurrawa, placed 2nd in Round 3 and then claimed victory once again in Round 4 in big surf at Alexandra Headlands. Shannon sits on top of the leader board 6 points clear of his nearest rival.
In the women's field, Kristyl Smith took the overall lead after round 3 where she claimed her first race win of the series. Unfortunately her reign at the top of the table was short lived after losing her ski in the final leg of Round 4 and finished in 18th place. Clubmate, Elizabeth Pluimers, claimed victory in Round 4 for her first race win of the series. Elizabeth is the highest ranked BMD Northcliffe in 4th place with Courtney in 5th and Kristyl now relegated to 6th place.The 5th and final round, the "eliminator", will be held at North Cronulla on Sunday 21 February with double points on offer.

2009 Coolangatta Gold

BMD Northcliffe men filled the top four placings in yesterdays Coolangatta Gold. Caine Eckstein claimed his 3rd Coolangatta Gold victory with a dominating performance in the grueling 46km race. Veteran Dean Mercer put in an impressive performance to finish 2nd place a month out from his 40th birthday, with Nathan Smith in 3rd and Cory Hill in 4th place.
In the women's race, Courtney Hancock finished 3rd with younger sister Bonnie in 5th place. Elizabeth Pluimers, who lead the race going in to the final run leg collapsed with exhaustion only 20 metres from the finish line and unfortunately was unable to finish.

In the Under 19 race, BMD Northcliffe's Michael Booth finished in 2nd place with Aaron Murphy putting in a courageous performance just to finish the race only 10 months after being hit by a car which left him in a coma for 3 weeks with severe head trauma.

2009 World Games - Taiwan

Congratulations to Shannon Eckstein, Kristyl Smith and Terri Sullivan who were members of the winning Australian Surf Life Saving Team at the recent World Games in Taiwan.
Shannon, who was the team captain, took out the Ironman event while Kristyl Smith took out the Female Surf Race Championship. Kristyl also teamed up with clubmate, Terri Sullivan, to take out the Female Board Rescue event.
Other BMD Northcliffe Members to compete at the games for their country of origin were Dan Moodie (NZL) who took out the Male Board Race and Eloise Van-Gysen and Kendall Loots (RSA) who were in the winning Female Rescue Tube Rescue Team.
BMD Northcliffe members, Elizabeth Pluimers and Nathan Smith, were also originally selected in the Australian Team but pulled out due to injury.

YOGA FOR OUR MEMBERS

The BMD Northcliffe Surf Club has introduced yoga to the Surf Sports Coaching program.Highly credentialed Santina Giardina-Chard has worked with many elite athletes on core strength, flexability and focus including the Gold Coast Titans. Santina has been working with the Northcliffe team, two sessions a week for a season now with many noticing significant benefits, both physical and psychological after being a little skeptical at first.
