Junior Development Training Squad Program 2010/11

BMD Northcliffe Surf Club have what we believe is the best coaching facility in Australia. Our training program is available to all junior activities members in the U8-14 age groups who wish to improve their skills and fitness. All sessions are free (pool entry required) and are included in your membership.

  • BOARD
    • Stroke correction, skills and race preparation
    • Some craft provided. Suggested that members purchase their own craft
    • No mals available for U14 members
    • May require wetsuit as temperatures decrease (Winter)
    • Sessions held at the club, Lake Hugh Muntz and Evandale lake.
  • SWIM
    • Must be able to swim 100m freestyle to attend sessions
    • Stroke correction and fitness training
    • Will require goggles and flippers (other equipment is provided)
    • Entry fee required for swimmers - No squad fees required
    • Sessions held at Merrimac High, TSS and Guardian Angels
  • BEACH
    • Sprint, flag and relay training
    • Technique and race preparation
    • Sessions held at the club.
  • IRON
    • Changeovers, transitions, ins & outs, body surfing and surf skills
    • Will require goggles and craft
    • Sessions held at the club
  • CIRCUIT
    • Circuit training including running, boxing, skipping exercises
    • Will require running shoes, shorts and drink bottle
    • Sessions held at the club
  • SHP
    • School Holiday Program
    • Extra activities and training session each weekday of the School Holidays
    • Sessions held at the club between 9-11.30am
  • HPS
    • High Performance Squad (advanced competitors are selected into this squad)
    • Focuses on improving performance and fitness
    • Encourages participation at selected senior training sessions
    • Allows age managers to concentrate on less confident members at nipper days

GAVIN HILL

Head Junior Coach

Gavin Hill is a past competitor himself winning numerous State, Australian and World Titles throughout his career. He has been the head coach of BMD Northcliffe for the past 6 seasons.

Highlights:

  • 3 x gold medals, Masters Australian Titles 2010 (including age group Ironman Champion)
  • 45-49yrs Australian Board Champion 2009
  • 45-49yrs Australian Ironman champion 2008
  • 45-49yrs Coolangatta Gold Champion 2007

TIARNE SMITH

Assistant Junior Coach

Tiarne has been involved in Surf Lifesaving since joining as an U/6 nipper in Sydney. Her favourite event was the board race where she picked up several State medals before competing in the board riding events. She is also the BMD Northcliffe Surf Club Junior Activities Co-ordinator.

Highlights:

  • 6 x gold medals, Masters Australian Titles 2010 (including age group Ironwoman Champion)
  • Australian Women's Short Board Riding Champion x 4
  • Australian Women's Long Board Riding Champion x 4
  • Australian Women's Board Rescue Champion 2001

PIERCE LEONARD

Assistant Junior Coach

Pierce has reached the pinnacle of Surf Sports winning the Australian Ironman Title twice. As a current competitor, Pierce brings a wealth of knowledge, motivation and encouragement to our nippers.

Highlights:

  • Australian Ironman Champion x 2
  • Qld Ironman Champion 2009
  • Ironman Champion Ocean Assault 2007
  • 22 Australian Gold medals (4th overall)

TENIELLE RICHARDS

Junior Beach Coach

Tenielle has been competitive in Surf Lifesaving since the age of 8. She grew up in Mooloolaba and moved to the Gold Coast to study at Griffith University. Tenielle joined the coaching team in 2007 and was also selected as a member of the Winter Institute of Australia traveling overseas to compete at International skeleton meets.

Highlights:

  • Australian Women's U19 Flag Champion 2007
  • Australian Women's U19 Beach Sprint Runner-up 2007
  • First Australian Female to win an international skeleton event - America's Cup
